I'm just as much of an atheist as the next (not you, not you, not you either, oh, here you are) person, but I'm even less of a capitalism believer. Like it or not, the Pope is rather famous - in a completely different way than the one measured in likes and retweets. He has a chance to be heard by those who would never hear the voice of this or that technologist. And if we want any kind of "ethical scrutiny" of the "aims and interest of (AI's) owners and developers" (i.e., the likes of Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, etc.) to actually ever happen and have any kind of effect, we need the support of as many people as possible.
I'm not a doomer or anything, but companies like Microsoft or Meta need to be watched closely, especially when they get their hands on some breakthrough. If this breakthrough is big enough, then maybe "maximizing value for shareholders" and "extracting every penny of value from it" are not the greatest responses to what are their "aims and interests".
