Wilhelm Schickard (1592 – 1635) – Father of the computer age
- gus_massa 3y agoMore info in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Schickard#Drawings_of_a_calculating_clock https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Schickard#Drawings_of_... , but I can't find any detail about how it works. I only found this description is Spanish https://historia.nationalgeographic.com.es/a/maquina-schickard-primera-calculadora_13867 https://historia.nationalgeographic.com.es/a/maquina-schicka... The autotranlation of the relevant part is > WHEELS AND GEARS > According to these notes, the calculator watch was made up of two parts. At the top, using rods that moved horizontally, the Napier system was reproduced to solve multiplications, divisions and roots. At the bottom was housed the completely mechanized procedure by which the chains of addition and subtraction that were generated were solved. It must be taken into account that with the Napier method, if a number was multiplied by another that contained three figures, once the rods had been chosen and the results had been read, three numbers were obtained, the sum of which had to be carried out using normal procedures, without aid. This is precisely what Schickard's model resolved mechanically.
