1) Physical Media that YOU physically own & control.
2) Off-Site Backups
Regardless of the threat, whether it is just bad media, house fire, ordinary thieves, or the FBI, relying on some cloud service as your only backup is a plan to fail.
If it is a threat if someone reads the backups, encrypt.
Sure, as a supplemental convenience, use Google or something. But as the only backup of your life's work? I feel really bad for them, they're obviously gutted. But at the same time, Google has been so publicly unreliable and high-handed for so many years (decades, really), that it's hard not to also feel some, 'whelp, what did you expect, doing something like leaving your valuables out on the sidewalk?'.
Edit: And test your backups
- xeromal 3y agoHe had backups. The FBI took them from multiple locations
- toss1 3y agoI didn't see that, but if so, then clearly more steps (i.e., more locations, hidden) were needed in that risk scenario. Plus, he had 60 days, then 7 days notice form Google. I'm not saying I don't feel bad for the guy, but can you really say that it was smart to rely on even a paid Google account, considering how often Google randomly drop entire product lines, or nuke individual accounts for random reasons with zero recourse (e.g., the screw-up of a 7-year-old kid described in the same article)?
- Ekaros 3y agoEven more so time line: 2023/05/26 News about FBI seizure 10 July 2023 End of grace period 16 December 2023 closure of account So there would have been plenty of time for new backups... Between July and December.
- Mashimo 3y agoI agree with having offsite backup. But for 250 TB that is not that easy or cheap. One disk of family pictures you can give to a family member.
- uxp8u61q 3y agoStoring 250 TB in a public cloud isn't going to be cheap either. Even aws glacier is going to be close to $1k/month for that amount of storage. And god help you if you actually want your files back (around $25k for retrieving the whole thing!).
