It's not just "like" a religious schism. As Charles Stross is fond to point out these movements draw very overtly from Russian cosmism[1]. From colonization of space, to immortality, mind uploading, and of course AI singularities, longtermism, transhumanism, AI doomsday cults map on these ideas almost 1:1. It's a secularized version of various Millenarian ideas. One thing that I've noticed having lived in East Asia for several years, mostly Japan and China is just how non-existent that stuff is over there. Never met an Indian AI doomer. It's always interesting to see what ideas are absent or present in other cultures because it gives an intuition about what motivates these beliefs.
