Essential AI
- javierluraschi 3y agoLooks like https://hal9.com https://hal9.com as in enterprise data analytics with LLMs.
- anonylizard 3y agoThere's like 7 startups already from the 'co-authors of the transformer paper'. Starting today sounds like being awfully late.
- davesque 3y agoHave to disagree. LLMs in their current form are not the end all be all of AI architectures. Seems like the co-authors of the original transformer paper are in a good position to find other valuable applications of the results described in the paper. They are also probably in a good position to see what other advancements are on the horizon that can be productized. Not sure why you would write them off as being too late to the game as though the game is already over. It's only over if you think that grabbing mind share on the current LLM hype train is the goal.
- nextworddev 3y agoBased on their landing page, it seems they still haven’t figured out exactly what they are building yet
- adriand 3y agoYou’re not convinced by “our technology will make data analysts 10X faster and give business users the tools”?
- outside1234 3y agoShut up and take my investment money for your bitcoi -- I mean, AI -- startup.
- codetrotter 3y agoI like BTC in and of itself. But where there ever any well-funded startups built around Bitcoin? To me, BTC is the “product” (actually, “the currency”) in and of itself and I don’t care much about what most businesses might or might not do in relation to it. Mainly that other people continue to share my view of BTC itself.
- Croftengea 3y agoThey have LLM mentioned on the front page. Whatever they're building it's 10x better with LLM.
- javierluraschi 3y agoPre-vision, pre-team, pre-product, and pre-revenue -- An opportunity to build the future in this blank canvas with the founding team.
- Zetobal 3y agoStatistically how often do the same people work on more than one breakthrough paper?
- quickthrower2 3y agoI'm finding it hard to understand what you are after. Is it given a researcher, P(second breakthrough paper|first breaktrough paper) for some definition of breakthrough?
- fzliu 3y agoMost breakthroughs are discovered accidentally and retroactively, so I'd think that having multiple breakthrough papers is fairly uncommon.
- hmottestad 3y agoOne could argue that someone who has published 3 breakthrough papers is more likely to publish a 4th simply because they must have deep understanding of the field to have published 3 breakthrough papers. It is obviously not a guarantee, but as with many things in life, previous success does tend to favour future success. Currently working at Google? It's more likely that you will work for Apple in the future compared to the average developer. Got good grades in physics, you will probably get good grades next term too when compared to your average class mate. Got a startup that focuses on some practical use of LLMs, much more likely to get funding than if it focuses on some practical use of Markov models.
- xianshou 3y agoThe interesting point here is that the two founders had previously co-founded a similar AI company, Adept, that raised a much larger amount of funding ($415m vs $57m here) to build foundation models: https://www.theinformation.com/briefings/two-co-founders-of-adept-an-openai-rival-suddenly-left-to-start-another-company https://www.theinformation.com/briefings/two-co-founders-of-... Why did they leave only to create a rival company in the same space? One could argue that Adept is more focused on native multimodality and agentic models (https://www.adept.ai/blog/act-1 https://www.adept.ai/blog/act-1) developed with longer-term research horizons in mind, but Essential also seems to be aiming at frontier-level capabilities in models trained from scratch. My bet: as with OpenAI/Anthropic, there's both a philosophical divide and a power struggle to be found in this backstory.
- xhkkffbf 3y agoI did a project with some of the Adept people. Very disorganized and chaotic. There were definitely people pulling in different directions. Made it very difficult for me and I'm glad it's over.
- moritzwarhier 3y agoI don't want to leave a comment without any value, but the words are just staggering here... essential AI — Building the Enterprise Brain what does that even mean?
- moffkalast 3y agoWell whatever it is, it'll be written in Java to be sure.
- aswanson 3y agoActual lol. Thanks.
- outside1234 3y agoIt means cold sweet investment cash, that's what it means.
- aswanson 3y agoSeems like a commercial for a startup on HBO's Silicon Valley.
- reqo 3y agoAre there any AI startups with big funding which are using AI to solve what was promised that AI would solve (climate change, cancer etc.)? Seems to me that majority of AI startups are extremely focused on either enterprise copilots/agents , fine-tuning/rag or something in between. I wish more startups would try to compete with DeepMind's science AI!
- marktolson 3y agoWho promised that AI could/would solve climate change or cancer? The focus at the moment is on the enterprise because that's where its current capabilities are useful.
- outside1234 3y agoThere is no money in science customers and lots of money in enterprise customers.
- JohnFen 3y agoNot that I know of. AI is just about making as much money as possible, as quickly as possible.
- marktolson 3y agoThis has got to be the easiest money ever made. Even the companies that joined in on the 2018/2021 crypto hype train had to write whitepapers. Not only do these guys not have a product, they don't even have a clear mission or a legit looking website. Yet somehow, they have tons of funding!?
- rambambram 3y ago"Enterprise Brain" sounds kinda scary to me.
