The main objection I have to this essay is the running metaphor of religion. Cult maybe, but is it a religion? You need to study the history of religions and their hallmarks to establish the metaphor.
- giraffe_lady 3y agoWhat do you perceive to be the hallmarks of religions that cults don't share? My understanding is that people who study them mostly consider it to be a matter of cultural legitimacy, and so don't use the term cult. They call them new religious movements, since their novelty is their main tangible attribute and it's impossible to know in advance which ones will catch on and become reputable religions.
