There’s a kernel of truth to what Andressen says which is that modern American culture is relentlessly pessimistic about almost everything and that is frankly ridiculous. I suspect this is because for a lot of the new left types any sort of optimism is defeating for their cause, which says good change can only happen by overthrowing the system. Therefore they have a strong incentive to push overwhelming negativity.

They are committed to an idea that our current system is evil and exploitative and if technological progress actually makes everyone's lives way better that would start to eat at their theory. Look at any major technology and you'll have armies of people talking about the downsides. You'll see that a cure for sickle cell is created and then you'll see everyone complaining that it's only for the rich. Ignoring every cost curve in history and the fact that these companies make the most money by being able to sell to the average consumer. Apple is worth a 3 trillion because its products can be afforded by almost anyone in the first world and a large number in developing countries (especially if a few years old).
