Consider that their efforts started years behind Google's, and yet their relatively small model (they call is mistral-small, and also offer mistral-medium) is beating or on par with Gemini Pro on many benchmarks (Google's best currently available model). On top of that Mixtral is truly open source (Apache 2.0), and extremely easy to self host or run on a cloud provider of your choice -- this unlocks many possibilities, and will definitely attract some business customers. EDIT: The just announced mistral-medium (larger version of the just open sourced mixtral 8x7b) is beating GPT3.5 with significant margin, and also Gemini Pro (on available benchmarks).
