EU plan to ban geoblocking will lead to dull content, warn film-makers
- pndy 3y agoI'll risk saying that content is dull already for years and productions that want to really show an interesting story or concepts instead of corporate "informing" are like needles in a haystack Geoblocking allows e.g. streaming companies to prepare a less attractive media catalogue that goes by same price where content is more generous. Access to media should be same for the whole continent or at least within EEA. Besides, this text seems to be also a hidden ad for Holland's film.
- EricE 3y agolol - I'm shocked that they are pledging to make content more dull than the dreck they have been churning out already!
- Log_out_ 3y agoThose creative media execs dream of a dull life with a reliable shareholder revenue increase and the goddamn artists wildcards finally forever removed from the process.
- hulitu 3y agoOne can make money selling shit, but only to be used as a fertilizer. /s Norhing sounds worse than a french movie dubbed in german.
- matt3D 3y agoThe counter, and more optimistic, take on this would be that there would be higher demand for niche cinema because the audience would grow. If the latest Czech drama or Estonian horror movie got into the zeitgeist because of international simultaneous release then that's a good thing no? The smaller markets would be able to compete more. Take Squid Game as an example, a very weird and particularly South Korean creation got the reaction it did because of Netflix's release strategy.
- extraduder_ire 3y agoNice to see moves toward an actual single-market.
- londons_explore 3y agoToday's licensing deals generally prevent any players from doing a simultaneous EU release with no geo-blocking. This proposed law effectively forces these deals to be rewritten.
- pjmlp 3y agoFinally! Lame excuses to keep the status quo that forces us to use VPNs.
