They do have multiple kill switches to stop the engines, up to dumping a bunch of flame retardant into it which makes it impossible to restart. The problem was that all these systems for the #1 engine were rendered inoperable by the damage caused by the failure of the #2 engine. Certainly there was a fair bit of luck involved as well.
