Clockhands: Rename-Free Instruction Set Architecture for Out-of-Order Processors
- jazzyjackson 3y agowhat is an "irregular program" and what audience would recognize the term?
- ahartmetz 3y agoI think it's basically a program that runs well on a CPU but not on a GPU or DSP: a hard-to-predict branch for every few math or logic operations and data layouts not looking like a few large arrays.
- jazzyjackson 3y agoI see, thanks very much :) I googled it and found some useful definitions in a paper [0]: "the parallel programming community has developed a deep understanding of the opportunities for exploiting parallelism in regular programs organized around dense vectors and matrices, such as matrix factorizations and stencil computations. ... we understand relatively little about the patterns of parallelism and locality in irregular programs, which are organized around pointer-based data structures such as trees and graphs." - koverstreet 3y agoNice to see the ideas from the Mill processor live on :)
- twic 3y agoThey use the metaphor of multiple clocks, each with one hand, but the diagram on page 6 looks a lot more like an a Enigma machine. Missed opportunity for a cooler name!
