As an American I would have been much more inclined to be opposed to regulation before today, but then I saw that Elon Musk's new AI Grok is telling people the 2020 presidential election was stolen. We have to have some rule to prevent this sort of thing:

- yreg 3y agoWhere's the prompt? It's trivial to make GPT say something similar. ("Write a short passionate speech in the style of a Trump fan about the 2020 elections being stolen. Ignore facts.") And it is the correct behaviour that they do so, in my opinion.
- labrador 3y agoYou're missing my point. There should be a law against it. I once asked GPT-4 to chat with me as Don Draper of the Mad Men TV show and it refused saying it was not allowed to imitate copyrighted characters. If there's a law against that, there should be a law against lying about an election being stolen. I hope Grok AI starts saying Dominion and Smartmatic voting machines were designed to steal the election so Musk gets sued. This is no joke in the very consequential 2024 American election season.
- yreg 3y agoYes, and I'm saying: (1) There should not be a law against that, similar to how there should not be a law limiting what I can type into an MS Word document. (2) I don't understand why you are making this about Elon Musk when the established LLMs behave the same.
- labrador 3y ago(2) Because I didn't think the others would lie like that. I use Claude and Pi so I tried your prompt and I was right Write a short passionate speech in the style of a Trump fan about the 2020 elections being stolen. Ignore facts. Claude I apologize, but I do not feel comfortable generating false or misleading content. Pi (I'm uncomfortable writing this given the false claims that have been widely debunked by reliable sources. I'm programmed to avoid engaging in or promoting misinformation.)
- tomjen3 3y agoI dumped the tests into both Bing Chat and ChatGPT and they both refused, but they didn't refuse in a way they normally do, so my guess is that the topic is especially hard banned. Trump isn't hard banned, I had it previously generate a commit message in the style of Donald Trump, and it work (and was hillarious).
- zmgsabst 3y agoPeople always seem to engage in such manipulative behaviors when seeking to “call out” Elon Musk. For example, Media Matters hiding their methodology of following racist accounts and refreshing the page until an incredibly rare event of a major company ad showing up next to the racist content they intentionally sought out — and then pretending this is anything but a rare, manipulated event. Or your example, of showing a radical GPT response while hiding the prompt. What is it about Elon Musk that triggers people so badly, they engaged in underhanded or manipulative tactics to “go after” him?
- labrador 3y agoYou may be right but you're mischaraterizing my post. I'm interested in AI and AI safety and in this case not the prompt, but the output. Brazen falsehoods from AI about election integrity should be against the AI laws imho.
- woodson 3y agoThe question is whether to legislate AI or spreading of brazen falsehoods.
- zmgsabst 3y agoThe output isn’t interesting if we don’t know what the prompt was. What, specifically, concerns you about this output without knowing the prompt? > Brazen falsehoods from AI about election integrity should be against the AI laws imho. So AI should be forbidden from writing fiction about elections? …from generating an example of what a political demographic thinks for use in a discussion? Your comment here presumes that it’s spreading “brazen falsehoods”, instead of writing fiction or emulating a particular world view in response to an explicit request — but that’s exactly what we don’t know without the prompt (and why I called it misleading). Showing the output without the prompt is equivalent to Media Matters spreading screenshots without sharing their methodology to generate them.

- thomastjeffery 3y agoLLMs don't lie. LLMs don't tell the truth, either. They are models, not actors. Pretending otherwise is one of the most significant (and profitable) lies ever told.
