The Hybrid-Car Dilemma

- h2odragon 3y ago(irrelevant ramble, apologies) We have a 2002 Honda Insight, it's been like a pet but now its past our ability to care for it or make use of it. We put 100k miles on Lydia but she's et this battery and has other deeper issues and we can't justify spending more money on her. I was very surprised to learn that no one wants it; scrappers treat NiMH batteries like toxic waste and she's carrying 800lb of them. They don't want anything to do with her even if I took those out first and put them in the Lowe's bins (only place in state that can accept them, apparently). We've got a local vocational school that's interested in accepting her as a donation, but there's apparently issues there, too. Sounds like someone has to be sold on the idea. If no one will take her I get to remove all the extraneous bits and go Mad Max with her. There's gotta be some fun to be had with that kind of electrical generation capability. First thoughts include an audio transducer; something like a big subwoofer. surely I can wind a coil and turn that energy into sound. "no jake brakes" hah.
- I_Am_Nous 3y agoYou could easily make a broad spectrum omnidirectional RF jammer worthy of a big FCC fine. Battery full, need to shunt power? Time to spread a little free wireless power for the homies! Another option is to have it pump a couple of CO2 lasers you have aimed at a disco ball rotating on top of the car. If you ever get chased by the cops you can turn on the disco laser so they can't stand to look at you. A somewhat less sociopathic option in the style of your first thought might be to have the regenerative braking power an electric air raid siren so when you slow down you have that nice descending whoop noise :)
- sokka_h2otribe 3y agoAre you familiar with the online insight mod community? I had a gen1 insight that hit 350k miles. But I only had it for some of them, including a transmission rebuild, EGR manifold clean out, and battery rehaul (it's was on 50S LiPO4. No one ever complimented me on it, but I loved my insight!
- omgwtfbyobbq 3y agoNiMH batteries still have decent core values last I checked, but this could be a regional thing. Where are you located?
