This does make me ask questions; namely, why the hell would anyone risk allowing compression more complex than RLE [0] in a firmware picture format? It's almost asking for trouble. [0] - Maybe there's something else out there that works better with similar ease of doing safely low level, would love to know other options!

John Carmack suggests using something even more basic than RLE: "Media file parsing has been behind so many security issues. In many cases today, using completely raw data is very practical. No DCT. No ADPCM. No RLE. Just raw pixels/samples.
