I've always wondered how this works on a technical level that makes it cheaper for Amazon to run but introduces multi-hour latency. Obviously Amazon employees aren't manually picking out hard drives from a shelf (...are they?). The article contains a bunch of possibilities and speculation but it looks like nobody outside of Amazon knows for sure.

It is also very possible that the multi-hour latency is merely a business decision meant to discourage using "Glacier" as an active read/write virtual disk.
- vaidhy 3y agoWhile I do not know the details, I believe tapes are still the cheapest store per GB and it is likely S3 would be using a tape library in a DC.
