The paper and effect is really cool but I feel calling it "a deepfake" is very clickbaity.
They are demonstrating a tech that allow to animate a photorealistic avatar model of someone. It's similar to what Zuckerberg demonstrated in the Lex Friedman interview.
It's really cool, but it's not really related to deepfake which usually mean taking a source video and changing the face of one of the subjects in the video.
You still need a high quality CGI mesh of the subject you want to look like, which you can animate using this tech. It’s not like you can easily create that mesh to easily impersonate anybody that you want, and even if you have a good mesh, it's limited to animating the face, with no way to insert it easily in an existing video.
