The Coddling of the American Mind
- incomingpain 3y agoThis was years ago, he wrote the book afterwards. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Coddling_of_the_American_Mind https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Coddling_of_the_American_M... I enjoyed the book. Kind of ahead of it's time. We have better understanding what's happening today, the book isn't out of date. Trigger warnings, safe spaces, microaggressions, identity politics, "safetyism", call-out culture, and intersectionality. but if you think for a second these are going away is crazy talk. You will find yourself politically exiled if your position is that you want to remove these. What we kind of have is the collision of multiple huge social factors that must be addressed. 1. Intersectionality or whatever communism's last grasp is called this week is going away. It will form a religion, where it will do extremely well. But their bread and butter is telling you all the ways you're oppressed and should feel bad for yourself. 2. Government policies have intentionally greatly reduced the amount of in person social interaction. Primary examples, alcohol taxes and drunk driving laws means far less social happening at bars. Tobacco taxes and restrictions means no social at smoke breaks. 3. Subconscious prejudices against certain groups keeps them suppressed. But 2 of these groups suddenly got extremely powerful and wealthy. Primarily being skin colours and LGBT/Autism/ADHD. Who used to be second class citizens appear to be the dominant people now. Read up on the autism epidemic in silicon valley and GWBush's war on autism. 4. Firearm ownership decline, roughly 10% in the USA but much more elsewhere in the world. Meaning your home is no longer a safe space and so you seek them outside your house. But those 'safe spaces' are often the worst places. I never understood the brilliance of the second amendment until I realized this. Alternatives are gated communities if you can afford it, or katanas? So what do you have when you never feel safe in your own home? You aren't getting your social needs met and you feel bad for yourself? Chronic stress, mental and physical health problems, coping with drugs, inability to have secure relationships, and frankly harmed quality of life. So now imagine you are Facebook or whatever. You are dealing with people who in large part are not holding their shit together, and you basically need to build little bubbles around them to minimize harms. You get the coddled mind.
