I use Seasons of Feast and Seasons of Famine. For about 3 months I will gleefully add new tools to my kit, trying them out, seeing what sticks and what doesn't. Then for 3 months I'll pare down to only what I actually find value in using from that collection. Rinse and repeat.
Shell Bling Ubuntu was partly formed out of running through this a few times. Every tool that is included in the 3 scripts is a tool I found persisting beyond a full Season of Famine, and therefore it gets my recommendation. https://github.com/hiAndrewQuinn/shell-bling-ubuntu https://github.com/hiAndrewQuinn/shell-bling-ubuntu
- sonicanatidae 3y agoI'm on the SysAdmin side, but do similar with the tools/apps I keep handy. It's a great way of paring down what you actually need commonly and what's damned handy, but only once in awhile. Ventoy is a great tool for those that need multiple bootable images handy, but even then, I have to pare down the images on it, at times, because when I find a handy image, I tend to just throw it on the Ventoy drive.
- gausswho 3y agoLove this. Is there a reason you feel a season (3 months) is optimal? Does it change depending on the craft?
- joombaga 3y agoI do the same, but over 30 years instead of 3 months. I turn 36 this weekend. It's not going well.
