Toxicity at Wikipedia
- hilbert42 3y agoWikipedia has repeatedly blocked my access to edit pages in recent years. The block isn't aimed at me specifically but rather my ISP's block of IP addresses. Frankly, this blunt unsophisticated and wrongly-targeted discrimination is outrageous and I no longer even attempt to edit or correct mistakes. I know however the blocks are still in place when I accidentally hit edit or such. If Wikipedia was functioning properly as an organization it would address these problems. Furthermore, I find myself using Wikipedia less and less because of its never-ceasing demands for money. One has to wonder what's really going on inside the organization.
- ycombinatrix 3y agoare you logging in or editing anonymously?
- boffinAudio 3y agoWhy would it matter if the IP block is simply being dropped?
- ycombinatrix 3y agomy understanding is that they ignore IP address for logged in editors.
- boffinAudio 3y agoThis makes no sense - you can't log in if your IP is in the blacklist block ..
- ycombinatrix 3y agoIt's not a total IP block. They only block editing. Try it out yourself with a public VPN.
- hilbert42 3y ago"Try it out yourself with a public VPN." Yeah, perhaps. But frankly that's an impediment that I no longer have sufficient enthusiasm to overcome. :-)
- hilbert42 3y agoExactly!
- hilbert42 3y ago"...they ignore IP address for logged in editors. But you have to get that far. It's so long ago since my last edit I can't remember my login details (that's if they'd be still valid).
- hilbert42 3y agoI don't get as far as logging in—see my other comments.
- kurtreed 3y agoThe real shocker is that there are two dozen sexual harassment scandals against women on Wikipedia, involving editors, admins and even high-up stewards and sysops. https://rdrama.net/post/215764/there-are-two-dozen-sexual-harassment https://rdrama.net/post/215764/there-are-two-dozen-sexual-ha...
- s08148692 3y ago"Despite the fact that anyone can edit any page" This couldn't be further from the truth. Anything even slightly controversial or popular is heavily gated

- boffinAudio 3y agoWikipedia models the social issues faced in the USA today. The problems it faces are problems all Americans face. A real solution to the problem is to diversify the nationalities of the core editors involved - however, as a resource, Wikipedia is too important to escape American hegemony, so this won't happen. Or, at the very least, the context of operations will always be framed from the perspective of the donations from the American military-industrial complex, which has had its grips on the Wikimedia foundation since its birth, since Wikipedia is a formidable propaganda organ in its own right ..
