European parliamentary insights on bias and regulation, preceding the AI Act
- jruohonen 3y ago"The statements released by each of the main political parties delineate distinct party-driven perspectives on AI development, bias mitigation and the management of the data economy. Notably, the EPP Group underscores the importance of AI bias detection and mitigation, data quality and international collaboration, in line with their party's proclivity for fostering ethical and human-centric AI solutions in a global market context. In contrast, the S&D Group prioritises strict adherence to EU legislation, human rights and non-discrimination in AI, consistent with their commitment to ensuring equitable treatment and engendering trust among citizens. Renew Europe's strong emphasis on fundamental rights and data fairness mirrors their party's overarching values. The Greens/EFA, meanwhile, place a strong focus on averting AI bias and granting citizens greater empowerment, a reflection of their commitment to a human-centric approach to AI." A notable limitation in the study is that the author assumes MEPs and their political groups to be fully independent, autonomous agents, whereas, in reality, lobbying and interest group politics are fierce. Thus, the question of who really is pushing whichever agenda still remains unclear.
