Hard to explain. Here are a few examples and please remember these are largely opinion based and will vary by the person.
1. Microloans to local people to start a company instead of investing in traditional stocks. Best if you can assume the money is lost from the start. I suspect returns won't always be great...but it may make a huge difference to a person and their community.
2. If you are investing in rental properties. Do you really need to raise the rent on your tenants just because a website and/or another landlord said you should? There is a lot of money to be made just from gains in property value over a long term lease. Some are likely in a situation where they have paid off the property and could afford to leave it vacant.
Why not set the rent to what the "median renter" in your area can afford. I know in my area this would make a huge difference to keeping the local workforce which will benefit the entire community overall. Right now there is a $5/hr gap between what a median renter makes and what they need to make to live comfortably in my area and rent.
Not increasing rents would have a much greater effect than raising wages.
I suspect there are many more but those are 2 just off the top of my head...and again these are largely my opinion.
My belief is that it is possible to make a profit while practicing "ethical capitalism".
This cannot be forced though...it is an ethical choice. Nothing is stopping anyone from doing the opposite...but do you have to?
