I've always been a bit baffled by these types of discussions. Doesn't any of you have multiple versioning systems, say "internal" and "external" at the minimum? One project I'm on has an internal version number of around 28-dot-something-something. This is the number for techies, and it conveys some information that end users are fully ignorant of. End users see "Edition 2" in stead (soon to become 3)
