Sure, but if they really need that service they will gravitate to distributions that do provide it, so, I think, no harm done here. It's to me like JDK distributions. Some give you six month, some give free LTS and others give you LTS with a support contract. LTS with backports is work, someone has to pay for it, so let those who really need it pay. Everyone else can enjoy the new features. tl;dr: I'm with you in the camp that you can leave it to the distributors.
