What would you have learned in 1 year of humanities studying that you didn’t learn in 4 years of humanities is high school, that would have made a huge difference? In addition, for such traumatic life events, it is community and relationships that help, more than any particular knowledge. I am not for banning books. I just don’t think that 18-22 year olds benefit as a cohort from spending intensive time studying the humanities, when they could be studying all sorts of other things. By all means read books, talk with friends, meditate, contemplate , read and write poetry. But to devote 4 years of your life from 18-22 as the primary means, is a waste.
