Americans don’t know how nice their comparative living standard is relative to the living standard in most of the world. Many examples of average European (depends on the country), and average Asian or average Gulf state families have a lot of asterisks when trying to find a similar standard of living, and access to opportunities. Not my opinion, here’s some data: https://www.worlddata.info/average-income.php https://www.worlddata.info/average-income.php
The misfortune of Americans is that influx of lower skilled immigrants requires nanny state policies to prevent humanitarian crises. Doubly unfortunate is that American colleges attract student populations from deeply flawed and suffering countries, leading to understandable feelings of their own country having experienced unfairness and injustice “by the West”, whatever that means (it’s just veiled racism and sour grapes in many instances). I don’t labor under any delusions that “Capitalism” is the reason why life is hard for the average human in the world (let alone the U.S.). Given any other system, human nature will set things up the same.
Generally, it doesn’t pay to be optimistic about the behavior of people, anyone who is not in a position of power shouldn’t be expected to behave any differently than those who currently are in power. In fact, history has shown, and it continues to do so, that losers in the past behave the same as their oppressors. In short, Americans don’t know how lucky they are and they should hope that their luck continues.

- lusus_naturae 3y ago> Authors Alicia Adserà, Andreu Arenas, and Carles Boix surveyed 6,000 people in total — 2,000 each from the U.S., France, and Brazil.
- adastra22 3y agoYes, the study covered France and Brazil. That’s what I said. This is an international study, so your presumptions about Americans are out of place.
- lusus_naturae 3y agoI was speaking to the results on Americans in this study > To put America’s result into context, the average monthly income in the U.S. is roughly $6,000 (or $72,000 annually). Thus, the average American would need to make $19,165 per month ($230,000 annually) to choose to live in an authoritarian society rather than a democratic one.
