I Teach the Humanities, and I Still Don't Know What Their Value Is
- downrightmike 3y agoTo make well rounded graduates, was the original idea, now universities use it as a requirement to graduate and honestly it seems like they are there to keep you in school longer because the major course work for most majors can be done in a couple years. And losing a couple years of tuition is something universities aren't going to do. Humanities are largely a relic of a bygone era, and if we want to prep students for jobs when they graduate, so they can pay back the ridiculous loans, we should focus on hand-on work in their majors.
- gnicholas 3y agoCan anyone explain why the title would use both singular and plural to refer to "the Humanities"?
- Whoppertime 3y agoIt seems like the kids don't know as much. If you take a classics class from 20, 50, 100 years ago, they will have a better understanding of Latin, better understanding of Ancient Greek. Which leaves professors with the choice of watering down the curriculum, inflating grades or both. And when professors have done this for a decade so standards have evaporated I can understand why they would ask "What is the value of what I'm doing?"
