Global outsourcing has been a thing for decades now, and yet there are still software developers in California. At the end of the day "anywhere on the planet" just isn't true. Language, work culture, time zones, shared educational base, low network latency, and more are all still important in remote work and place strong constraints on how geographically distributed a team can be. Even splitting a team up between West Coast and East Coast presents difficulties due to time zones -- and that's a case where everything else is more or less identical.
