I heard mention on a podcast recently [0] that if you hold down the button in the iPhone camera app it will capture a set of photos and then mark the one that it thinks is the 'best' (based on, for example, the photo where everyone has their eyes open). Not the same as what happened here of course.
(I keep forgetting to try this, not least because I always try to get the people out of my photos!)
[0] This one, I think: https://podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/the-talk-show-with-john-gruber/id528458508?i=1000632890966 https://podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/the-talk-show-with-joh...
- carterschonwald 3y agoI think there’s also how the Live Photo feature works. Where taking a photo is literally a short video and it picks the best frame
- macintux 3y agoUnfortunately they changed the behavior a few major releases ago: now holding the button down switches to video recording. Annoying for me, since I don't do video. If you use the software button you can slide to the left for burst, but afaik there's no way to trigger burst photos from the volume buttons. Maybe the new programmable button on the iPhone 15 series.

- macintux 3y agoThanks, I glanced at that page but didn't notice the tip at the bottom.
- dmix 3y agoThat’s still a cool shortcut I didn’t know about. It not only switches to video but it “gates” the button press so it only records a video for as long as you press the button
- macintux 3y agoYou can also lock the video recording by sliding to the right.
- fshbbdssbbgdd 3y agoI think if you have the Live photos option turned on (the default) it will automatically take a burst every time you hit the red button.
- macintux 3y agoVideo, although there might be a configuration option somewhere. Historically Live Photos were of poorer overall image quality, so I only turn them on when I want to simulate a long exposure. Not sure whether that's still true.
- fshbbdssbbgdd 3y agoIf I go into the photos app edit menu for a live photo, it allows me to scroll through the timeline and pick “make key photo” for any moment during the video. Maybe it’s lowering the res or something if I do that but from UI, it seems like I’m getting a photo captured from whenever.
