Segregation in Big Cities
- lifeisstillgood 3y agoCrime rates are a policy choice. Degree of Segregation is a policy choice. A trick I have heard is to lock your future self into choices you would like future self to take - from pre-ordering lunch to automatic savings. Societies are I guess similar - and the voices we make from walkable city streets to conscription will affect inequality (and we suspect lower inequality leads to wealthier societies all round)
- whelp_24 3y agoThe data collection for this study is dystopian in itself. Like, regardless of the goals, this study should be impossible to do. It doesn't seem like these people consented to be tracked, having there income and race guessed, along with their friends. Anonymized seems like a misdirection with this level of inference.
- inamberclad 3y agoAfter living in places like Houston and Palo Alto (polar opposites!) This is not remotely a surprise. Heavy division on race and class lines is obvious everywhere. It's part of the immense polarization in the US. Even people living a few miles from each other can exist in totally different universes.
