Just curious. What type of "stuff" is discussed in a board? I mean, if it is about methods/approaches/techniques that worked well, then msft gets the full insig

  In theory the board is the collective experience, social, and financial capital to run a company. I was once on a board so I have limit experience although the dynamics are all there as with any collective of voting and non-voting. In my case, the board members each had spouses, which of course had no voting rights but because we are human - data leaks, information passes brains, words get spoken and when it came time for decisions - the spouses had influence if not veto over their respective board members. While MS may not have a vote - they can frown, wink, and nod to their hearts delight. Also, the board generally governs in private and then makes public announcements. The time between those events is where power is used.
