I think the current standard for your own binaries is ~/.local/bin instead of ~/bin https://specifications.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/basedir-spec-latest.htm

  I would probably end up symlinking ~/.local/bin to ~ anyway, at which point I wonder why bother?
