I have an insanely hard time believing that a CEO that copies his customers and competes directly with them with his own consumer product will be “doubling down” to help customers.
Sam has shown he has no good will towards anyone but himself.
- mikeg8 3y agoBuilding products on top of their platform and then getting mad that they continue to add and improve said platform with additional functionality (without knowing their product roadmap in advance) seems petty. If they’re able to eat their customers lunch so quickly, it’s because the customers are building very thin and weak businesses with no actual innovation.

- MVissers 3y agoI mean, basically no-one can compete with OpenAI right now. They have a monopoly. They can start copying any business that relies on them tomorrow. And it’s not easy to build a better model. Do that’s not an option. So you basically use them to deliver a tangential product woth the risk of them copying you, or refuse to play in AI. You can’t innovate with OpenAI tech without risking that they’ll just copy you It’s the amazon playbook: become the store and copy the best selling products. I love gpt-4, just hate the direction of openAI. Sam knows he can take over the world with OpenAI, so he’s just doing it.
- tsunamifury 3y agoI spent a year and half a million dollars with two ex-Mina engineers from Google and we simply lack the funds and information superiority to compete with OpenAI on any level. And VCs are running scared to go against the big players because they simply Dont have the funds. It’s really grim out there. But I guess I’m just a whiner according to this dude. The reality is that anything that works is quickly snatched up by bigger players and you have no moat if you can’t work on your own model. And with Microsoft owning the near years worth of cards to do inference on it’s gonna be hard to even try to do that. So you are left being the equivalent of an Uber driver for OpenAI slowly making negative value while pretending to get short term gains — and being scale capped by costs.
- mikeg8 3y agoWow, that’s a really sad situation. Must be difficult for you. Good luck buddy, will be awaiting to see you build your own model.
- mikeg8 3y agoThere’s a difference between a true monopoly and first mover advantage. There is competition in AI, it’s just behind. I agree on the risk of building on them, but then again any business has its risks. My main point was that some of these first AI startups built on Open AI were always going to be eaten by them because the put themselves in the way of open AIs roadmap. I don’t believe the Amazon comparison yet, although they may eventually go down the copycat path. But many of these startups that were recently made obsolete were just trying to piggyback on the real innovation that is the GPTss. I’m very happy with GPT 4 and the newest updates, it’s a great tool for me. Disruption will always been painful for some and the frothyness around AI and fear of missing out is making people a little more cynical than is healthy, IMO.
- vikramkr 3y agoAh yes, all those "customers" that build products that were a thin wrapper of chatgpt with an extra feature, truly the innovative powerhouses that will revive our economy /s. I mean seriously, if anyone thought they were going to build a business around a got based startup to parse documents when document parsing is already a specific goal with benchmarks in AI that openai was obviously going to be working towards - well, I'm glad it didn't take long to clear out those grifters.
- tsunamifury 3y agoSeems so odd to be such an jerk about it…
- vikramkr 3y agoAfter wave after wave of theranos/crypto/NFTs/ftx etc etc honestly I've got very little patience left and they've soured the entire national mood on silicon valley to the point where this crowd was the justification for a lot of people to want to let SVB take down actual companies with it instead of a bailout. I find them actively harmful, and now they're trying to whip up a storm whining about anticompetitivenes to stop development in a rather useful tool. Won't pretend there isn't a little bit of glee watching the folks who just jumped from NFTs into this as the new big thing seeing their investment already go up into smoke.
- tsunamifury 3y agoYou are conflating a ton of completely unrelated issues here to a point of total ignorance.
