Justice Minister to grant sweeping powers, 'need to see private social media'
- uberman 3y agoAt least they tell they have 772 "partners" they share data with. Though after seeing that I lost interest is the article.
- jruohonen 3y ago"The Cabinet also gave approval on Tuesday for an amendment to data legislation which will permit Garda inspectors to require communication service providers such as Vodafone to provide ‘cell site location data’ in the interests of protecting a person’s safety or life." Now it is no longer about perpetrators but practically everyone. "The minister has also said she will expedite powers for An Garda Síochána to be able to use facial recognition technology, to be able to use cameras when out on the beat and to push through the policing Bill currently held up in the Seanad." Regardless of a country, these events always prompt the pitch for biometrics. "Speaking earlier in the day, she said: ‘I do not want any member of An Garda Síochána looking over their shoulder unsure as to what type of level of force that they can use in responding to these type of difficult scenarios.’" Maybe face recognition should apply also here? "The move would mean that officers, under certain circumstances, could access private WhatsApp, Facebook messenger and Signal messages." While no one trusts Meta, mentioning Signal in this case interesting. "‘My sense is that we do have to tackle incitement to hatred and I would ask people who had genuine concerns about the Bill to reflect now – because all we have to do is look at social media platforms last Thursday night." Not that I disagree, but stick with the DSA?
- Macha 3y agoWell, the EU finally gives up on this, only for my national government to have a go at it. Someone should remind them of the, it seems like several a year, cases of gardai abusing the data in the pulse system, and that's just active cases and complaints.
