Car Dealers to Biden: EVs Aren't Selling
- gnicholas 3y ago> Dealers have a 103-day supply of EVs compared to 56 days for all cars...EV sales are slowing though manufacturers have slashed prices and increased discounts... The reason, as the dealers explain, is that “early adopters formed an initial line and were ready to buy these vehicles as soon as we had them to sell.” But most consumers aren’t “ready to make the change,” in part because EVs are still too expensive. I was looking at some PHEVs recently, to replace our current PHEV. The price premium was $12,000 over the ICE version. Given how little we drive, we'd never make up the difference. This is especially true with interest rates where they are (the discount rate for future savings is high), and with the fact that our insurance would be higher for a vehicle that costs $12k more. There are nice savings to be had with EVs, like lower maintenance costs. But the price premium can't be this high if you want people to buy them.

- john_the_writer 3y agoWhy we're going with EV's over hybrids is beyond me. Build up the battery and charging stations on hybrids to the point they are really just EV's with a backup. It's more than sticker for me. I'd be afraid of going to my in-laws and running out of juice half way there, only to be stranded. ICE's make me feel safe, that's what it boils down to. Knowing that the grid can't support wide-spread EV adoption isn't a small thing. Rolling brown-outs don't make me think electric wins the day.
