Amazon announces Q, an AI chatbot for businesses
- 2OEH8eoCRo0 3y agoHow long until they're caught using Q to "compete" with and eliminate their own customers? If you compete with any of Amazon's businesses in any way it would be wise to steer clear.

- giancarlostoro 3y agoReally... so we've got Q and Q* and both are AI related, and probably going to be awful to look up in most search engines without added word soup like Golang, Rustlang (if I see another Rust game server thread when looking up Rust things, I'm going to scream). I assume this is named based on Q from Star Trek.
- malfist 3y agoI think it's named for Q Learning https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q-learning https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q-learning
- gloyoyo 3y agoMight be amazon sometimes called "*".
- slowmovintarget 3y agoThis is certainly the reason for OpenAI's codename.

- rubinlinux 3y agoArticle claimed its from James Bond

- TuringNYC 3y agoI'm CTO of a SaaS platform called Q also! And we have a Q Chatbot too! https://www.sparksandhoney.com/q-platform https://www.sparksandhoney.com/q-platform
- nerbert 3y agoWelcome to Amazon!
- lukev 3y agoWonder how long before Qanon conspiracy nuts latch on to this naming pattern. Sigh.
- 1270018080 3y agoThe way people drum up language models like a doomsday cult actually had me thinking this was a Qanon related thing when I first heard about it.
- paulddraper 3y agoSimple Q Service was already taken :/
- frognumber 3y agoI am very skeptical. Amazon's AI team seems to be the B-players who couldn't find a job at Google, Apple, OpenAI, Facebook, and friends, and things they've delivered were always less than impressive. Toxic work environment doesn't draw the best people. I use a lot of Amazon services, but their code completion was abysmal compared to co-pilot. Whisper wipes the floor with Amazon Transcribe. Etc. The pricing is also questionable, at $20-$25/user/month. I use generative AI a lot, and my OpenAI API bill is a fraction of that. It's also not well-integrated with the rest of AWS, where I want APIs rather than per-user services. The upside is less than clear.
- airstrike 3y ago> It's also not well-integrated with the rest of AWS To be fair, nothing is well-integrated with the rest of AWS
- ldjkfkdsjnv 3y agoCompanies that arent leading in AI: Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, every other tech company Companies that are leading in AI: OpenAI
- glimshe 3y agoYou forgot Bytedance and the other Chinese companies in the "not leading in AI" list. I always think about what you wrote when I see Yann LeCun criticizing everybody else while failing to present a winning technology. I'm no OpenAI or Sam Altman lover but the truth is that people laughed at Chatbots, and even at AI in general, until ChatGPT appeared.
- ldjkfkdsjnv 3y agoI always laugh at yann LeCun, he's clearly jealous, and potentially out of touch. These naysayers are always wrong

- gmuslera 3y agoI’m sure that naming a chatbot after a Star Trek godlike entity will not raise fears on superintelligent AGIs.

- gumballindie 3y agoHow much does amazon pay for promotions disguised as “news”?
- _lvbh 3y agoI’ve been seeing an excess of Amazon articles on HN recently. Are they paying for coverage?
- mystcb 3y agoIt's currently Re:Invent 2023 [1], where AWS usually "store up" announcements for the week. Meaning a load of product announcements are being released in quick succession. That would explain a higher than usual number of articles and links being put up. [1] https://reinvent.awsevents.com/ https://reinvent.awsevents.com/
