To expand on my own experience a little, I refused to stop in a job that was extremely stressful and that I had become totally burned out in. I had the breakdown, not the sabbatical.
My latest job after returning to work eventually became a problem after about a year, partly because of rhe jo. Itself, partly because of residual burn out from not stopping when I knew I should have before.
This time I left before I had a breakdown and after 2 months I'm back in a better position now than I was 12 months after having a meltdown.
Do what you gotta do. Becoming unable to work because you tried to push through burn out will not help your career one iota, quite the opposite.
