It Turns Out the Hot Hand Effect Is Real in Basketball (2014)
- JumpinJack_Cash 3y agoIt was the stupidest hill that statisticians decided to die on. Hand-eye coordination memory and muscle-memory are a thing, especially if you don't change your spot (eg during free throws), if you make the first then you have higher odds of making the second due to hand-eye coordination memory and muscle-memory. It's something experienced by everybody who ever played basketball at any level, but of course people who never touched a basketball had to chime in and say : "Acfftually...every free throw is like an individual coin toss". It ain't.
- xanderlewis 3y agoIt even seems intuitively true for domains other than basketball. When I’m ‘in the zone’ I’m probably way better at doing whatever I’m doing, so a streak of productivity is likely to continue. And each success probably heightens your cognitive readiness and gives you enthusiasm to commit entirely to getting the next.
