Shock as New Zealand axes world-first smoking ban
- jason-shen 3y agoI guess the governments need the high tax from smokers, you will know why if you know how much a packet of 20s cost in nz lol, its like over 30 nzd per packet
- joegibbs 3y agoGood news. Less people are smoking now than in the past, due to being educated about the dangers, so we don’t need to go all out to ban it. If people want to harm their own health they should be allowed to. It’s especially ridiculous to bring in a ban like this while drugs like marijuana and LSD are on track to be legalised worldwide - it seems like politicians are banning and legalising things based on whether they’re in right now.
- jjgreen 3y agoAww, and the UK government just last month decided to follow the NZ ban https://www.gov.uk/government/news/prime-minister-to-create-smokefree-generation-by-ending-cigarette-sales-to-those-born-on-or-after-1-january-2009 https://www.gov.uk/government/news/prime-minister-to-create-...
- Arnt 3y agoSounds like that'll relieve the finances by providing tax income at once and hospital costs in later years. Who pays the hospital costs in NZ? Is that practically paid via the state budget or via separate insurance organisation(s), in which case smokers provide tax income to the state budget and increased costs to the insurance budgets (and ultimately the insured nonsmokers)?
