We need more catch-up mechanics and fewer win-more mechanics. But the rules-making strongly favors wealthy, old incumbents, and disfavors poor, young newcomers such that the rules themselves are immune to such a reversal. I fear that nothing will stop this feedback loop from the inside. The incentives are too strong, too obvious, to everyone involved to change their view, to give up advantage, especially for something as nebulous as "the survival of society". To be sure, along with humility and wisdom, self-restraint, honor and magnanimity is now described only in derisive terms, the vices of a loser rather than the virtues of the great, at every level of society. Such a society is immune to ideas such as these.
