Adopting beliefs can be a strategy to signal commitment to an in-group
- hn_rationality 3y agoIt is common to see people posting absurd beliefs/political takes on social media. One likely reason is that absurd/radical beliefs in the direction of your group's positions give credibility to your commitment to your group.
- mandmandam 3y agoI was enjoying the article until decolonization was presented as an example of an absurd statement. Yes, ecocide and trauma cause inflammation. That's not absurd at all. Stress causes inflammation; that's simply the general consensus. What's absurd is jumping to the conclusion that they are the sole cause of inflammation. It's not the Doctor's fault that some people, apparently including this writer, can't read a DAG.
- hn_rationality 3y agoThe absurd statement is not decolonization but the implied causal graph, which is not a DAG, incidentally, as it is cyclical.
- mandmandam 3y agoIt's explicitly a DAG [0]. And, there's nothing absurd in the graph that I can see. Curious, what makes you think it's cyclical? As far I understand, it's only a cyclical graph if the loops are closed, which they are very clearly not here. 0 - https://twitter.com/DrRupaMarya/status/1726101733997441132 https://twitter.com/DrRupaMarya/status/1726101733997441132
