While I believe consumers should be much more educated about biology and healthcare, drug advertising doesn't really do much on the education front and I feel direct to consumer ads should be much more highly regulated.
Imagine being a software developer and a client comes to you asking to develop an app. He doesn't know much about the implementation of software engineering, but is insistent that you build the app in C# .NET 6.0. Intrigued, you ask if he has an existing code base in .NET. No, he just wants the new app built in .NET. You try to tell him that React/NextJS, a stack you've got years of experience in will be able to do the job, and probably even better for his given use case, but he insists and eventually reveals he's adamant because he saw an ad for .NET.
The relationship between drug advertising, patients, and physicians is kinda like this right now, except the stakes are way, way higher.
