I am going to preach it again.
Electric cars, with SMALL batteries and tiny (3hp?) fossil fuel generators.
This minimizes pretty much every downside of ICE and pure EVs, including the fire hazard.

Batteries do not contribute in those fires as Norway found out in the Sola parking garage fire. Not a single EV battery pack ignited. You’d have more chance of oil/gas leaks than with pure EVs. With hybrid you maximise the number of parts and things that can go wrong. With a small battery you maximise the number of charge cycles it experiences, so after 10-15 years you’d have both the issues with an old ICE and badly degraded battery. Not that I wouldn’t want to see small and smart series hybrid cars. At least in a transition period. There’s these linear free piston engines that could be very efficient for this. But a pure BEV is the ideal solution in the end.
