This is not limited to either "violent" events or "the Levant" — HN is not about any type of "current events" anywhere. This is clearly outlined right there in the Guidelines:
> Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, or celebrities, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. Videos of pratfalls or disasters, or cute animal pictures. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

I personally have used it in the past for both the stories about the Ukraine-Russia war and Israel-Gaza war. I also used it on this particular submission, which doesn't bring anything to the HN table.
- hef19898 3y agoThe only submissions getting death flagged faster than anything about Modi, India, castes and Indian religious nationalism are stories about the current Gaza war in which Israel is criticised.
