If the guy is more of a engineer/scientist stereotype than a people person, this shouldn't be that surprising. He probably made a decision that he thought was for the right reasons, without thinking at all about how other people would react. Look up "social defeat." It's real, and it's one of the worst things you can experience. Imagine having strangers online mocking your hairline and everyone upvoting that comment. Imagine going around town and having people frown at you.
