Edmund of Abingdon's Dream Job
- petesergeant 3y agoAbingdon is such a weird little place, having alternated for a few thousand years between “important place” and “shit hole”. Currently some amazing old ruins, a very impressive 17th century townhall, surrounded by some truly dreary suburbs and some properly urban hell shopping malls. Wouldn’t surprise me if it somehow managed to outlive nearby Oxford.
- petecooper 3y ago>Abingdon is such a weird little place Abingdon emigré here, happy to +1 that sentiment. I lived there from the early aughts until 2012. It's where Sophos is headquartered, too. I have no connection to the place these days, but if you want some hyper local blog action, have a look at: https://abingdonblog.co.uk https://abingdonblog.co.uk
- tonyedgecombe 3y agoI was there from the mid seventies until the early nineties. It was quite a bit smaller when we moved in. The main problem now seems to be the traffic. I'm not sure what you could do about it other than bulldoze the centre.
- jetbooster 3y agoIt's also the location of JET, the Joint European Tokomak!
- tonyedgecombe 3y agoJoint European Torus, which is shutting down: https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-67101176.amp https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-67101176.amp
- kitd 3y agoThe Thames in that area is extremely beautiful (having rowed on that stretch and a few neighbouring ones.)
