Reminds me of a kit I got as a kid in like 1999 that was just a diode, some enamel wire, and an earpiece. It had you wind a coil on a paper towel tube and make a capacitor out of aluminum foil and more paper towel tubes. I could only ever pick up a single station no matter how I tweaked thr "tuning capacitor". After reading this, I bet it was just a local station swamping out everything else. I'll have to find a similar kit for my nephew. He's real into engineering and I think he's old enough now for me to teach him about electronics
