Why would a charity time staffing announcements to the hours of the stock market?
- danielbln 3y agoBecause they don't exist in a vacuum and relationships matter, even to a charity, and not pissing off a trillion dollar company for no good reason might be beneficial.
- CPLX 3y agoWhy would it be beneficial if the mission of the charity is explicitly to keep AI technology from being under the influence and control of private trillion dollar companies?
- terafo 3y agoI don't know, maybe because it's their main partner that have given them billions of dollars and which is literally running their servers?
- CPLX 3y agoBut the servers are basically there to support the product that they’re selling. What if they feel like they shouldn’t be focused on selling a product? In the 20 threads about this topic on HN over the last few days I’m really kind of blown away by the inability for people to see a different worldview than their own. Wanting a stake in hot in demand super valuable tech company that’s growing rapidly is a value judgment. Not everyone wants that. Some people actively think companies like this are harming society.
- terafo 3y ago> But the servers are basically there to support the product that they’re selling. Everything they do needs LOTS of compute. GPT-4 training alone took 100 million GPU hours to train. And they are constantly training new models. And even non-training research is VERY expensive[1]. Without compute that organization is as good as dead. - CPLX 3y agoYeah they also have literally the most valuable and in demand new tech product in a generation. The idea that Microsoft is somehow the one with the leverage here is fucking delusional yet I see it in every thread over this weekend. They could get caught with a dumpster full of dead babies and there will still be a line around the block of people that want to partner with them.
- terafo 3y ago> Yeah they also have literally the most valuable and in demand new tech product in a generation. > What if they feel like they shouldn’t be focused on selling a product? Investor interest stems from focus on product. Having most valuable and in demand product in a generation doesn't matter if you bury it into the ground. > The idea that Microsoft is somehow the one with the leverage here is fucking delusional yet I see it in every thread over this weekend. If you think that anyone will give billions of dollars to organization that fucks their investors and is that much unstable, you are the one delusional.
- carapace 3y agoWhat is MS going to do? Ask for their money back? Kick OpenAI off their cloud? If MS takes their ball and goes home because the OpenAI board made a decision they didn't like, it's better that that happen sooner rather than later, eh? The whole point of OpenAI is to put human values before the profit motive, no?
- terafo 3y agoThey can just stop giving them new GPUs, undercut their API prices by a significant margin(they have the same models!), set up transitioning pipeline, etc. They can cause OpenAI A LOT of pain if they want to.
- chasd00 3y ago> Because they don't exist in a vacuum and relationships matter, even to a charity, and not pissing off a trillion dollar company for no good reason might be beneficial. look at it this way, pissing off a trillion dollar company for no good reason is an existential risk no matter what org structure you have.
