Au contraire, Monsieur.
The reason that Western sanctions have had very little effect on Russia the last few years is that Russia has become very self-sufficient in all areas of its economy since around 2010.
Ditto for Chinese semiconductors. The US embargoes are going to do more FOR Chinese semiconductors than AGAINST them. They are pushing the Chinese to go faster in their race towards semiconductor self-sufficiency. Once they reach that, not only will the Chinese not need US semiconductors any more, they will actively compete against them.
Like the US steel and concrete industries, the US semiconductor industries are headed for oblivion. When the US semiconductor industries could have been raking in billions of bucks, for years in the future, except for those stupid embargoes.
- fspeech 3y agoSome companies will suffer like those making standard parts in analog and mixed-signal but overall I think US companies will do okay. Most are not manufacturers with fab operations already outsourced and they have wider choice of fabs than their potential Chinese competitors. The downside is that they will lose Chinese OEM customers who now fear to depend on them. This will be particularly pronounced in consumer electronics.

Without the sales in the largest consumer market of the world, the US chip companies won't have the necessary funding to remain 'ahead of the game' with R&D. They'll first lose their lead, and then fall further and further behind the richer Chinese companies. As I said above, the US chip makers are headed for oblivion. The US is plagued by short-term thinking: always shooting themselves in the foot with their zero-sum games.
