Yeah, I see this as a pretty bad day for the AI world, the splintering of talent could very much hold back development, considering how OpenAI is so far ahead of everyone else, anything that slows them down while others start up, means slower benefit to society.
- layer8 3y agoThe disagreement seems to be exactly about whether OpenAI’s recent trajectory is beneficial to society at large.
- analognoise 3y agoAfter Silicon Valley gave everyone terrible gig jobs and disastrous social media that amplified polarization then ended privacy to sell ads, does anyone really think anything they produce is a “benefit to society”? Like how much damage do they have to do in the name of efficiency, profit, “the future” before the “benefit to society” meme dies?
- j_maffe 3y agoBecause obviously the faster we develop tools for the rich and powerful to make more money and have more control, the better it is for society.
- ChildOfChaos 3y agoOpenAi’s tools are available to most people, not really just the rich and powerful.
- hn_throwaway_99 3y agoGoogle's tools are available to most people, yet the lion's share of the money still ends up with Google.
- j_maffe 3y agoIt's not just about availability (even though it is compute-limited, making it a technology only for those who have access to sufficient equipment or paying for it). Some technologies enable even more accumulation of wealth and success to the successful. AI is a prime example of that. When all the big conglomerates own all the supercomputers and have their own virtual employees, what will incentivize them to take into account the benefits of the general public?
- singularity2001 3y agomaybe it's a good day for the AI world if stopping this rocket means exploring other architecture venues like maybe Hintons forward forward networks on other hardware.
- brucethemoose2 3y agoOpenAI was another pseudo monopoly in the making. They were pretty explicitly trying to scare congress into regulatory capture over (very misleading) fears of AGI danger.
- swalkergibson 3y agoOpenAI is not far ahead of Google. In fact, they are within reasonable distance. Although now Google is the undisputed leader, given that Microsoft does not have the internal resources to maintain this thing.
