As most likely lots of cryptographers read this, I have a question. What's an efficient way to store encrypted data in a database (only specific table columns)

As most likely lots of cryptographers read this, I have a question. What's an efficient way to store encrypted data in a database (only specific table columns) and decrypt them on the fly while querying the data? Using postgres with pgp_sym_encrypt(data, key) seems very slow.
